'Apprentice' Dispatches Two Magna Corpses In a very special rose ceremony on Thursday (Feb. 3) night's "Apprentice," Verna, who lost her cool and wandered aimlessly around Coney Island last week before being rescued by Carolyn, switches gears once again and quits the game, leaving the Magnas high and dry.It seems all that book learning takes a toll on one's constitution.Things start out well enough -- at least from Danny's way of seeing things. He's playing his guitar, singing a song and obviously wishes that "American Idol" would raise the age limit even higher so, at 39, he could pursue that dream on national TV too. He's happy that Verna is still with them; happy the team won a task, happy that they're all starting to get along. Truly, it's all Care Bears and My Little Ponies for Danny.Alas, Verna isn't on the same page. She's in bed, on her side, staring at the wall. She insists that she has the inner strength to go on, but that she's physically sick. We're not sure what the nature of her illness is, but it appears to be a general malaise/hysteria.Danny decides to get Magna Corp. together for a support group and presumes to tell Verna that if the next day she's still feeling sick she can stay in bed while the rest of the team goes out to win the task. This magnanimous display does not go over well with the other team members expected to carry her weight. It's not put to the test either, since Verna decides to throw in the towel and quit. Our favorite part of this whole series of events is that once she leaves the apartment she becomes dead to the game. Donald doesn't bother to even mention her actions, preferring to take the tact that if she's not strong enough to continue she may as well be dead to him.Who knows? Maybe all she needed was a good, strong cup of coffee.Task No. 3 is revealed to be a marketing campaign for Nestle Nescafe Taster's Choice. Like anyone can top the commercials of the 1990s that starred Anthony Stewart Head.Angie leads the charge for Net Worth and is way more enthusiastic than the challenge merits. She whips together a campaign, complete with a political rally, debates about whether instant coffee is better hot or cold and a $10,000 giveaway. It's not particularly inspired, but succeeds by sheer force of will.Things don't go nearly as well for Magna Corp. Danny is made project manager and after mere seconds of good humor, things begin to fall apart.Michael, who led the team to victory last week, is exempt from firing this time around and takes that as license to contribute nothing to the task at hand. Oh, he does insist repeatedly that everybody loves a beautiful European model and that he'll buy anything a good-looking woman wants to sell him.Erin points out that this road will alienate women consumers. Michael says it doesn't matter because they can just double up on the men.Yes, because they do so much of the grocery shopping.Danny demonstrates his inherent flakiness some more when Stephanie locates an event planner to coordinate things and he puts it to a team vote as to whether they should spend the money to engage his services.Bren, who nominated Danny for project manager in the first place, makes up for this bad idea with a solid one, noting that since he's been in New York everywhere he goes he sees people walking down the street with coffee in their hand an iPod in their ear.He fails to mention that cup of coffee is from Starbucks, but spotting the conspicuous iPoding is a good call.
Everyone gets excited about giving away iPods. Everyone except Michael. He's a snob and insists, "people with money don't walk, they drive."So? What's your point? People with money don't buy instant coffee either. Not that it matters. The Magnas' thrown together giveaway and slapped together cups of product do nothing to impress the people at Nestle. Net Worth is sent off to celebrate its victory with champagne and an airplane ride while Magna is told to meet in the boardroom.Everyone is appalled by Michael's abuse of the exemption and try to convince Donald that it should be revoked so that Michael can be sent home. Danny chooses to bring him and Stephanie back in with him.Donald decides that rules are rules and exemptions are exemptions, so Michael remains unfirable for the time being. Since Stephanie found the event planner (one of the only things Magna did right) she's safe, leaving Danny to take the long taxi ride home with only his guitar for company.Sorry Danny, we won't be seeing you in Hollywood.
